The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) has issued a high flood alert for the Chenab and Jhelum rivers after heavy rainfall in India and Kashmir. Authorities have warned that more rain is expected over the coming days, increasing the risk of flooding across several parts of Pakistan.
According to the FFD, a high flood is likely in the Chenab River at Maralla Headworks due to continued rainfall between July 20 and July 24. Officials are closely monitoring river flows as weather conditions remain unfavorable.
The FFD has also warned of a high flood in the Jhelum River near the Mangla Dam. Rising water levels may create dangerous conditions in nearby areas if rainfall continues during the forecast period.
Officials said the Kabul River and nearby nullahs may also experience high flooding. Water levels are expected to rise as runoff from upstream areas reaches Pakistan.
The latest advisory states that heavy rainfall could also cause flooding in several important drains connected to the Jhelum and Chenab rivers. Local administrations have been advised to remain alert and prepare for possible emergencies.
Flash floods are also expected in streams and nullahs across Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat, northeastern Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan. Northeastern areas of Balochistan may also experience similar conditions.
The weather system is expected to increase water flow rapidly in mountainous regions. Residents living near streams, rivers, and low-lying areas have been urged to remain cautious during the wet spell.
The FFD also warned that heavy rainfall may lead to urban flooding in several major cities between July 20 and July 23. Areas at risk include Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Multan, and Faisalabad.
Urban flooding can disrupt traffic, damage infrastructure, and affect daily life. Authorities are expected to monitor drainage systems and respond quickly to emergency situations if needed.
