HEC Announces Dual and Joint Degree Programmes for Pakistani Students

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has approved the introduction of dual and joint-degree programmes in universities across Pakistan. Officials say the decision is aimed at expanding academic opportunities and improving the quality of higher education in the country.

According to HEC officials, students will now be able to enroll in two degree programmes at the same time. The new policy will allow students to study in different academic disciplines without being restricted to a single department.

Authorities said the move is designed to provide greater flexibility to university students. Officials believe the latest initiative will help students build broader academic skills and improve future career opportunities.

The HEC has also approved joint-degree programmes between universities. Under this system, students will be allowed to complete part of their studies at one university and the remaining portion at another institution.

Officials explained that universities offering joint-degree programmes must first sign a memorandum of understanding approved by the HEC. The agreement will outline academic standards, course structures, and institutional responsibilities.

The new framework will also allow partnerships between Pakistani and foreign universities. Students may now have opportunities to earn joint degrees through collaborations with international institutions.

Education experts say the decision could improve Pakistan’s higher education system by encouraging academic cooperation and modern learning methods. Many believe international partnerships can help students gain better exposure and access to global educational standards.

The HEC Commission formally approved the programmes as part of wider reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s university sector. Officials said more details regarding implementation and admission policies are expected in the coming months.

Meanwhile, concerns continue to grow regarding academic activities at the University of Karachi. The Karachi University Teachers’ Association recently announced a boycott of semester examinations scheduled to begin on May 5.

According to reports, teachers warned that exams would not take place unless their demands are addressed by the university administration. The situation has raised uncertainty for thousands of students waiting for their examinations.

The teachers’ association has also called a general body meeting to discuss future actions and ongoing issues at the university. Representatives reportedly plan to contact the Sindh Chief Minister regarding financial and administrative concerns.
