HEC Takes Big Step to Verify 36,000+ Degrees in Major Crackdown

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced a major step regarding the verification of academic records. The authority will re-examine the credentials of 36,931 students enrolled in unauthorized campuses. The process will focus on ensuring transparency in academic Degrees.

The decision was taken during the 46th meeting of the HEC, chaired by Chairman Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar. Officials said the move aims to strengthen the credibility of higher education systems in the country.

According to details, an independent committee will be formed for this review. The committee will include external experts outside the HEC. It will be responsible for verifying the academic Degrees of affected students.

The HEC clarified that it will only provide secretariat support to the committee. Some members of the commission also recorded dissenting notes during the meeting. This shows that the decision involved detailed discussions on policy matters.

The review will include cases where students previously received verified Degrees. Later, their status was suspended after it was found they studied at unauthorized campuses. These cases will also undergo fresh examination.

Officials said the purpose is to ensure that all academic Degrees meet proper standards. The review process is expected to bring clarity and fairness to affected students.

In addition, the HEC approved major reforms in the attestation system. The traditional physical attestation process for Degrees will now be replaced with a digital system. This change is expected to improve efficiency and reduce delays.

The new system will rely on evidence-based verification methods. It will also simplify the process for students applying for Degree attestation in the future.

Another key decision includes removing the requirement for submitting prior or subsequent academic records. This applies to Degree attestation and equivalence processes.

Authorities said these reforms will modernize how Degrees are verified in Pakistan. The goal is to make the system more transparent and user-friendly.

The HEC emphasized that maintaining the integrity of academic Degrees is a top priority. These changes are part of broader efforts to improve higher education governance.
