Karachi’s historic Delhi Government School has been sealed following court orders. The well-known educational institution is located in the Federal B Area of Karachi.
The building has now come under judicial custody following the latest development. The Sindh education department also placed a written notice outside the building.
Students and teachers were directed to contact the district education officer or the Directorate of Education. According to the notice, the building is being handed over to the Old Boys Association.
The education department said the action was being taken in compliance with court orders.
Delhi Government School Once Dominated Board Results
Delhi Government School was once considered among Karachi’s most prominent public educational institutions. It developed a particularly strong academic reputation during the 1980s and 1990s.
Students from the institution regularly secured leading positions in matriculation examinations. The school continued its strong performance in board examinations until around 1996.
Private schools later began dominating science group positions as public-sector education faced broader challenges.
However, the institution returned to attention in 2024 when one student secured a matric science position.
Admission Was Considered Highly Prestigious
The institution was also popular among prominent families in Karachi. Securing admission was considered prestigious, while competition for available seats remained intense.
Its teachers also developed a strong reputation within the public education system. Transfers to Delhi School were reportedly considered an honour among experienced government teachers.
The institution became particularly associated with its headmaster, widely known as “Shamsi Sahib.” He earned a reputation for resisting recommendations from influential people during the admission process.
A former education official recalled an incident involving admission recommendations from the chief minister’s office.
According to the official, Shamsi Sahib insisted that such requests should be brought to him directly.
Around 2,000 Students Could Be Relocated
The education department is now preparing plans for students affected by the building’s closure. Three government schools currently operate from the same building.
These include girls’ schools operating in morning and evening shifts. A boys’ School also operates there during the morning shift.
A senior secondary education official said total enrolment is approximately 2,000 students. Authorities are considering transferring these students to nearby government schools.
Court Orders Date Back to 2007
According to an education official, orders concerning the building were originally issued in 2007. The orders called for the property to be handed over to the Old Boys Association.
At that time, public schools were operating under city governments. Then-Karachi city nazim Mustafa Kamal reportedly played a role in keeping the institution under government control.
Students also reportedly opened the locked building themselves and entered the premises during that period. The education department continued efforts to retain the building afterward.
Officials said the department had also regularly paid rent for the property.

The latest sealing now raises questions about the relocation of students and the future use of the historic building.
