The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has banned the use of the phrase “Christians only” in job advertisements for garbage collectors and sweeper positions. The court declared the wording discriminatory and ordered it to be replaced with “civilian” in all future postings.
Justice Inam Amin Minhas issued the order while addressing broader concerns about the treatment and safety of sanitation and sewage workers across Pakistan. The court emphasized that discriminatory practices in hiring must end immediately.
The IHC also expressed deep concern over the rising number of sewage worker deaths. Many workers continue to face hazardous conditions, including exposure to toxic gases, without proper protective equipment. Justice Minhas stated that leaving workers in such dangerous conditions is a form of serious negligence. He said, “Sewage workers are not mechanical parts” and deserve full safety measures and basic facilities to protect their lives.
The court directed all relevant departments and authorities to adopt strong safety protocols for sewer and sanitation operations nationwide. Officials must ensure that “Christians only” language is removed from all job advertisements and that future postings comply with non-discriminatory hiring practices.
Authorities were further instructed to submit a detailed report to the deputy registrar judicial within two months. The report must outline progress on safety reforms, proper equipment provision, and compliance with the new hiring guidelines.
This ruling by the IHC reflects the judiciary’s commitment to protecting the rights and safety of vulnerable workers. By eliminating phrases like “Christians only”, the court is promoting equality in employment opportunities while also enforcing the importance of safe working conditions.
