The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed a fresh medical examination of PTI founder Imran Khan. The order came while hearing a petition seeking his transfer to a private hospital.
The court instructed authorities to form a new medical board to assess Imran Khanโs health. The board will decide whether he should be shifted outside jail for further treatment.
During the hearing, the IHC emphasized that a proper medical report was essential before any hospital transfer. The bench questioned why no formal report had been submitted from the previous medical board. Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro asked whether decisions could be based only on the prison superintendentโs statement.
The court rejected the request for Imran Khanโs immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital. However, it highlighted that a detailed medical examination should occur first. The new medical board will then recommend any hospital transfer if necessary.
Imran Khan is currently receiving treatment in jail. Islamabad Advocate General Ayaz Shaukat told the court that the former premierโs health condition was satisfactory. He said that Imran Khan was under proper medical care and treatment was ongoing.
The court also discussed the inclusion of Dr. Nadeem Qureshi of Shifa Eye Hospital in the medical board, at Imran Khanโs request. Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir acknowledged Dr. Qureshiโs expertise and suggested a brief examination at Shifa could clarify the former premierโs health status.
Justice Tahir warned officials that they would be responsible if Imran Khanโs health deteriorated. The advocate general assured the court that the government would accept responsibility.
PTI lawyers cited the rights of prisoners, referring to the case of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. They argued that Imran Khanโs personal doctors should be allowed access for medical examinations. The court noted that Pakistanโs constitution recognizes the rights of all prisoners to proper healthcare.
