ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan is scheduled to appear before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) today (Wednesday) for the hearing of a bail petition in the £190 million settlement case, which expires today.

The former premier has left his home in Lahore for Islamabad.

The IHC granted interim bail to the deposed prime minister in the corruption case on May 12 until May 31.

On May 9, paramilitary forces arrested Khan from the IHC premises, sparking violent protests across the country.

However, after nearly three days in jail, he was released after the Supreme Court ruled that his arrest from the high court grounds was “illegal.”

Passes for special events

The court has issued special passes to lawyers, journalists, and government officials for the hearing to ensure that the proceedings go smoothly, as a large crowd would make it difficult.

Employees of IHC and court personnel are exempt.

The high court said in a circular that it has authorised 15 of Khan’s lawyers to accompany him, as well as 10 employees of the advocate general’s and attorney general’s offices and 30 members of the IHC Journalist Association.

NAB’s prosecutor stated in its request for 14 members of its legal team that their people were not given passes during the previous hearing.

The case

The former prime minister, along with his wife Bushra Bibi and other PTI leaders, is facing a NAB investigation into a settlement between the PTI government and a property tycoon that reportedly cost the national exchequer 190 million pounds.

According to the charges, Khan and the other accused allegedly adjusted Rs50 billion — 190 million pounds at the time — sent to the government by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA).

They are also accused of improperly obtaining over 458 kanals of land in Mouza Bakrala, Sohawa, to establish Al-Qadir University.
