inDrive Safety Questioned After Rider Arrested for Harassing Schoolgirl in Lahore

Students in major cities like Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad often depend on online ride-hailing services such as inDrive, Yango, and Bikea for safe and affordable travel. However, a recent incident in Lahore has raised serious concerns about passenger safety, especially for young students.

A matric student booked a ride through inDrive from Johar Town to a private housing society, expecting a simple and secure journey. Instead, the ride turned into a frightening experience. The driver, identified as Shoaib, allegedly diverted the route toward Ali Zeb Road in Gulberg without her consent, creating panic and fear for the young passenger.

Police later confirmed that the inDrive rider was arrested on charges of sexual harassment. Using modern tracking technology, law enforcement traced the suspect to Noor Jahan Road and quickly apprehended him. The arrest came after DIG Operations took notice, instructing SP Shaherbano Naqvi to form a special investigation team to handle the case efficiently.

Reports reveal that the harassment escalated near a park, leaving the student deeply shaken. A formal case has been registered, and the suspect is now with the investigation wing. Police officials have stressed that any form of exploitation or harassment against women will be met with zero tolerance.

Following the incident, the Federal Ombudsperson for the Prevention of Harassment demanded detailed records of harassment cases involving ride-sharing drivers over the past three years. The concerned company has been instructed to submit a full report within seven days. This report must include data on internal inquiry committees, procedures for handling complaints, and steps taken to ensure rider safety.

The case has sparked widespread outrage across social media and within the community. Many are calling for stronger safety measures and stricter screening of ride-hailing drivers. The incident highlights the urgent need for better protections for women who rely on online transport services for daily travel.
