The annual cleaning of the Khanpur Dam canal has led to a substantial reduction in water supply to Islamabad, presenting challenges for both residents and authorities. The decrease in water supply from the Khanpur Dam by 60% has prompted adjustments in water distribution across the city, particularly affecting sectors F-10, F-11, G-10, G-11, and D-12. To address this reduction, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has implemented alternative supply arrangements, including an increase in water supply from the Simly Dam by 2 million gallons.

Despite these measures, CDA officials express concerns about the city’s finite water reserves, estimating a two-month supply remaining. Without significant rainfall, Islamabad could face severe water shortages in June and July. This situation underscores the longstanding challenges in meeting the city’s growing water needs, with demand reaching 120 million gallons but only 55 to 60 million gallons being supplied.
While tube wells and water works contribute significantly to the water supply, their capacity alone may not bridge the demand-supply gap. The city’s water security concerns necessitate a multifaceted approach, emphasizing sustained investment and innovation in water management practices. As the cleaning of the Khanpur Dam canal progresses over the next ten days, stakeholders remain vigilant in monitoring the situation and implementing contingency measures, reflecting a collective commitment to navigating through this period of transition with resilience and adaptability.
