A major security breach was reported in Islamabad after President Asif Ali Zardari’s convoy deviated from its designated VVIP route. The incident has led to the removal of a senior traffic police officer from his position.
Islamabad SSP Traffic, Retired Captain Syed Zeeshan Haider, was relieved of his duties following allegations of negligence and poor coordination during the President’s movement. He was also responsible for ensuring the safety of the VVIP convoy.
The lapse occurred on Thursday evening when President Zardari, accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and other officials, was on his way to a private engagement in Bahria Town.
Despite a pre-planned secure route, the convoy missed its turn at Koral Chowk and continued along the Islamabad Expressway, moving outside the designated security perimeter.
Police sources revealed that the breach posed a serious threat to the President’s safety. It also highlighted gaps in traffic management and VVIP security protocols. The incident has raised concerns over the effectiveness of current measures in place to protect high-profile leaders.
Authorities have now launched an internal review to identify the reasons behind the lapse. Further administrative actions are expected once the inquiry is completed. Islamabad SSP Traffic’s removal is seen as the first step in addressing accountability.
This security incident has sparked wider debate about coordination between law enforcement agencies during VVIP movements. Experts stress that such lapses must be taken seriously, as they not only endanger lives but also undermine public trust in security arrangements.
The inquiry’s findings will determine if additional reforms are needed in traffic and security management for state leaders. Until then, the matter remains under review.
