Islamabad Set to Launch Free Public Wi-Fi: Here’s How to Use It

ISLAMABAD – The government of Pakistan is set to provide free public Wi-Fi at major locations in Islamabad, but users will need to verify their identity before accessing the service.

The National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) has finalized standards for rolling out the free Wi-Fi, aiming to complete the initiative as soon as possible. This move is part of the government’s push to increase digital accessibility across the capital.

Under the new system, anyone wishing to use public Wi-Fi will have to provide their name and mobile phone number. A digital log will be maintained, recording which user accessed the internet from which specific public location. This step is intended to prevent misuse and ensure cybersecurity across all hotspots.

Wi-Fi hotspots will be established at metro bus stations, central commercial districts, and other public spaces. Officials confirmed that NTC is working with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other relevant departments to speed up the rollout.

In addition to providing internet access, NTC has been instructed to implement strict cyber-security measures to protect users and public networks. Officials emphasized that the identity verification process is crucial to maintaining the safety and integrity of the network.

“This initiative will allow citizens to access free internet safely while ensuring that public networks are secure,” said a senior official. “By recording user details, we can monitor usage and prevent potential cyber threats.”

The project aims to promote digital inclusion, particularly for students, commuters, and individuals who rely on internet access for work and research. Experts believe the initiative will not only enhance connectivity but also encourage safe and responsible use of public Wi-Fi in Islamabad.
