ISLAMABAD – Traders in Islamabad have announced protests across the city on Thursday, October 8. They warned of a possible Shutter Down Strike if their demands are not addressed. The announcement was made by All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajiran leader Ajmal Baloch. He spoke at a press conference at the National Press Club in Islamabad. Baloch criticized the government over high electricity prices and taxation policies.

He also raised concerns about what traders called excessive pressure from government departments. Traders said these issues are creating serious difficulties for businesses in the capital. Under the protest plan, shops across Islamabad will remain closed for two hours. The closure will take place from 3pm to 5pm on Thursday. Traders will also hold demonstrations outside their respective markets.

The main demonstration is planned at Aabpara Chowk. The protest will take place despite Section 144 being imposed in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Traders said they will continue raising their concerns through peaceful demonstrations. Baloch warned that the protests could become a Shutter Down Strike if the government fails to meet their demands. Such a move could affect commercial activities across Islamabad.

The traders also warned of a possible march toward the Prime Minister’s House. They said the next course of action would depend on the government’s response to their demands. Baloch strongly criticized the rising cost of electricity. He said expensive power has placed a heavy financial burden on businesses. He also raised concerns about the Federal Board of Revenue and its taxation system.

According to Baloch, traders face frequent tax notices and repeated visits to government offices. He described these practices as a source of pressure for the business community. The traders’ leader called for greater transparency in the FBR and other government institutions. He also demanded a more business-friendly environment across the capital.

Their demands include affordable electricity, better security and sufficient parking facilities. Baloch also proposed a simpler tax payment system for traders. He suggested allowing taxpayers to pay their taxes directly through mobile phones. This system could reduce the need for repeated visits to government offices.

Baloch also spoke about restrictions on shopping bags. He said authorities should first take action against factories producing banned bags. He also called for measures against the smuggling of such bags. He urged the government to provide affordable and practical alternatives to shopping bags. Baloch said traders and consumers should not face unnecessary difficulties.

The traders’ leader further said the business community should not be treated as criminals. He called for traders to be treated with dignity and respect. The situation will depend on the government’s response to the traders’ demands. Further action, including a Shutter Down Strike, may follow if no progress is made.
