KARACHI – Javed Akhtar Odho has officially taken charge as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh. His appointment comes after the retirement of Ghulam Nabi Memon. The official notification was issued a day after his name was announced.
Javed Akhtar Odho is a Grade-21 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan. He brings more than 25 years of policing experience to the top post. His career reflects steady growth through key leadership roles across Sindh and beyond.
Odho joined the police force in the late 1990s. His first major posting was as Divisional Police Officer of Larkana. Over time, he served in several districts. These include Ghotki, Badin, Dadu, Jamshoro, Thatta, Matiari, and Hyderabad.
He also handled sensitive assignments in the Special Branch. These roles helped him develop expertise in intelligence and security operations. His work in these departments earned him recognition within the police service.
During his career, Odho served as Deputy Inspector General in multiple units. He worked as DIG West Karachi and DIG Special Branch Sukkur. He also led the Rapid Response Force. In addition, he managed administrative and finance departments in Karachi.
In 2019, Odho served in Balochistan. This assignment added to his experience in handling complex security situations. Later, he returned to Sindh and held senior roles. These included Additional IGP for Research and Development, Special Branch, and Investigation.
Javed Akhtar Odho was also appointed Karachi’s police chief. He stepped down from the position during by-elections. In July 2024, he returned to Karachi as Additional IGP. This move showed his continued involvement in provincial policing matters.
His appointment as Sindh IGP comes at a critical time. The province faces growing security and administrative challenges. Observers believe his wide-ranging experience will help address these issues effectively.
Officials say Odho’s deep understanding of district policing will support better coordination. His background in intelligence and investigations is also expected to strengthen law enforcement.
