Jemima Goldsmith has responded to Defence Minister Khawaja Asif over his recent remarks about Jewish religious identity.
The exchange took place on X after Asif posted about the principle of Jewish matrilineal descent. His comments later prompted a response from Goldsmith.
Asif said mainstream Jewish tradition determines religious identity through the mother. Under this principle, a child is considered Jewish if the mother is Jewish.
He also discussed the historical reasoning behind the practice. Asif said the principle developed before modern DNA testing was available.
According to his post, maternity was historically considered certain. Paternity was viewed as more difficult to establish at the time.
The original post did not directly name Goldsmith, Imran Khan or their children. However, Jemima Goldsmith responded to the minister’s comments.
Goldsmith agreed with the religious principle described by Asif. She then explained how she believed the same principle applied to her own family background.
She said she had never been considered Jewish by the Jewish community. Goldsmith said her mother was a Protestant member of the Church of England.
She also referred to her father’s family background. She said her father would not be considered Jewish under the same principle.
Goldsmith said her father’s mother was a French Catholic. She used this point while responding to the discussion about Jewish identity.
She also alleged that the remarks were intended to undermine her sons. Goldsmith said the attempt had instead resulted in an “own goal.”
The exchange attracted attention online because of the political history involving Goldsmith and former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Goldsmith and Khan were married from 1995 until 2004. They have two sons, Sulaiman and Kasim.
The religious identity of Khan’s children has previously appeared in political discussions. The latest exchange brought the issue back into public attention.

Khawaja Asif later issued a clarification on X. He said his original post was not intended to target any individual or family.

The defence minister also said he had the utmost respect for all People of the Book. He added that this respect was consistent with what Islam teaches.
His clarification followed Goldsmith’s public response. It also addressed interpretations that his original post was directed at her family.
The exchange has since developed into a wider social media discussion. It involves questions about religion, ancestry and family identity.
