Karachi School Employee Ends Life by Suicide After Alleged Workplace Harassment

A tragic incident in Karachi has once again brought workplace harassment into the spotlight. A 25-year-old private school employee, identified as Usman, ended his life by jumping from the eighth floor of a building on September 1.

The building housed the school where Usman worked, located near Saddar. He was rushed to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), but doctors confirmed he did not survive.

Complaint filed against colleagues

Usman’s brother, Faizan, filed a police complaint after the incident. According to him, Usman had left a final note on Facebook, accusing three colleagues of causing him severe mental torture.

Police have since registered a case against the accused individuals β€” identified as Irfan, Hasan, and Talha. The case has been filed under Sections 322 (manslaughter) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Investigation underway

Authorities confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the alleged workplace harassment and whether it directly pushed the victim to take the extreme step. Officials say statements from school staff and family members are being collected to assist with the inquiry.

Concerns over workplace harassment

The case has raised serious concerns about mental health and accountability in professional environments. Experts stress that workplace harassment can lead to severe psychological stress, often leaving employees feeling isolated and helpless.

Activists and rights groups have urged institutions to implement stronger policies against harassment and provide proper mental health support. They argue that timely intervention could prevent such tragedies in the future.

The death of Usman serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need to address workplace harassment in Pakistan. It highlights the importance of creating safe and supportive work environments for all employees.
