At least 12 people were injured after a speeding vehicle crashed into a group of mourners outside a Karachi imambargah in DHA Phase VI on Sunday night. Police confirmed that the incident took place during a religious gathering, causing panic in the area.
According to officials, the vehicle involved was a Suzuki loader. It suddenly lost control and ran into people gathered near the Karachi imambargah. Rescue teams arrived quickly and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police arrested three suspects, including the driver, soon after the incident. The driver was identified as Zahid, while the other two suspects were named Bahadur and Momin. Authorities said Momin had escaped after the crash but was later arrested during a raid in Qasba Colony.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspects had spent time at Seaview before the accident. Police believe they may have consumed narcotics there. Medical tests of the suspects have been conducted, and officials are waiting for the reports.
Investigators said the Suzuki loader was stopped at a police checkpoint before the crash. The driver reportedly slowed down at first but then sped away. During questioning, the suspects claimed the vehicle went out of control due to overspeeding.
The speeding vehicle then entered the road leading to the Karachi imambargah and struck the mourners gathered outside. Police said one injured person was mistakenly detained at first, but later it was confirmed he was not with the suspects.
Officials also confirmed that the driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and is under treatment. Police are now cross-checking the suspects’ statements to verify the sequence of events.
A case will be registered by the organizers of the religious gathering. Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine all facts behind the Karachi imambargah incident.
