The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has taken a new step to improve basic civic services across the cityโs union committees (UCs). In a recent meeting, the administration announced that โKarachi mayor allocates Rs100,000 monthly to UCs for manhole covers, streetlightsโ as part of a wider plan to strengthen local-level maintenance.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the funds will help UC chairmen respond quickly to public complaints. He added that many local issues remain unresolved due to delays in financial approvals. The new monthly allocation aims to remove those delays and ensure immediate action on damaged manhole covers, broken streetlights, and other minor repair tasks.
According to the mayor, the decision was taken after repeated reports of missing manhole lids that caused accidents in several neighborhoods. He said the city needs a faster system to fix these hazards. โKarachi mayor allocates Rs100,000 monthly to UCs for manhole covers, streetlightsโ so local officials can repair essential infrastructure without waiting for KMC headquarters.
Officials explained that each UC will receive the funds directly. They will be required to maintain records of all repairs and submit monthly reports. The mayor said transparency and accountability will be strictly monitored to prevent misuse of public money.
The initiative also aims to improve streetlight maintenance, especially in areas that remain dark at night due to faulty poles. The mayor said better lighting will reduce street crime and help create safer roads for pedestrians and drivers.
Residents have welcomed the move, calling it an important step toward empowering local governments. However, some experts believe Rs100,000 may not be enough for UCs with larger populations. They suggest increasing the amount based on the size and needs of each area.
Despite mixed opinions, the city administration remains confident that the new system will bring visible improvements. By ensuring that โKarachi mayor allocates Rs100,000 monthly to UCs for manhole covers, streetlights,โ the government hopes to create a more responsive and efficient municipal structure.
The mayor reiterated that this initiative is part of a long-term plan to rebuild Karachiโs civic infrastructure and restore public trust in local governance.
