The ongoing campaign against fancy number plates in Karachi has been temporarily suspended, authorities confirmed. Traffic police will continue their deployment on city roads despite the halt.
DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah visited several areas and said the suspension is due to adverse weather, following directives from Additional IG Karachi. “The primary objective is to facilitate the public rather than cause inconvenience,” he added.
The crackdown initially targeted vehicles and motorcycles using unapproved or fake number plates. Operations involved traffic police, district authorities, excise departments, the driving licence branch, and the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).
All officers across Karachi’s 90 traffic sections remain deployed on the streets to maintain law and order. Pir Muhammad Shah clarified that the campaign against fancy number plates will stay suspended until weather conditions improve.
The initiative was launched earlier this week to ensure compliance with traffic regulations. Officials aimed to remove vehicles displaying illegal or decorative plates that do not meet legal standards.
Authorities emphasized that the suspension does not mean the campaign has ended permanently. “Operations will resume as soon as the weather allows, and all violators of number plate regulations will be penalized,” said the DIG.
City residents are encouraged to verify that their vehicles carry approved plates to avoid fines once the campaign resumes. Traffic authorities also reminded citizens that proper number plates are essential for legal vehicle registration and road safety.
The temporary halt has not affected other traffic enforcement activities, which continue as usual. Police remain vigilant to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during the suspension period.
Officials assured that the joint effort involving multiple departments will continue to improve compliance. Karachi residents can expect stricter enforcement once conditions stabilize, reinforcing the importance of approved number plates on all vehicles.
