The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted the first winter rain in Karachi on December 30. A system of westerly winds is expected to affect the cityโs weather on Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to the Met Office, temperatures in Karachi may drop, increasing the intensity of the frosty weather. The rainfall is likely to bring relief to residents who have experienced a dry start to the winter season.
The westerly wave will first enter the upper areas of the country on December 28. Under its influence, several regions in Balochistan are expected to receive rainfall on December 29. Following this, the system will move southward, bringing the first winter rain to Karachi, PMD officials said.
Most parts of Pakistan are expected to continue experiencing cold and dry weather. Northern areas may see partly cloudy skies, while central and southern Balochistan will remain partly cloudy. Fog is also likely during early mornings and nights in the plains of Punjab and upper Sindh.
The first winter rain is anticipated to improve air quality and provide much-needed moisture to Karachi, where temperatures have been cooler than usual for this time of the year. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, especially during morning and evening hours when fog may reduce visibility on roads.
PMD meteorologists said that this rainfall is part of a broader westerly wave affecting the country. They added that while the rains are not expected to be heavy, they will mark the official start of the winter precipitation season in Karachi.
Authorities have also urged citizens to stay updated with weather forecasts and exercise caution during the rain, as wet roads may cause traffic disruptions. The Met Office will continue monitoring the system and provide updates if further changes are expected.
