KP CM Afridi and Aleema Criticize Punjab Govt, Signal Public Protests

ISLAMABAD – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister (CM) Sohail Afridi has indicated that PTI supporters may mobilize through street protests to demand constitutional restoration and judicial independence. Speaking to the media, Afridi said preparations for the movement are underway, with the lawyers’ community expected to play a central role.

Afridi criticized the Punjab government for what he called authoritarian behaviour, citing restrictions on public gatherings and interference with party leaders’ visits. He accused authorities of misusing power, obstructing justice, and attempting to intimidate citizens. “The Constitution guarantees the right to hold public gatherings and protests,” he stated, signaling public protests if needed.

During visits to detained PTI leaders, Afridi emphasized that the resilience of imprisoned party members inspires the movement. He highlighted that KP allows opposition leaders to speak freely, contrasting it with the situation in Punjab, where officials allegedly block political activity. Afridi also vowed to personally lead the street mobilization to support judicial independence and democratic rights.

Aleema Khan, sister of PTI chairman Imran Khan, reinforced Afridi’s message, saying authorities fear the people and that barricades cannot suppress the movement. She urged citizens to remain calm while preparing for a larger public response. Afridi also expressed gratitude to lawyers and party workers who will participate in the mobilization.

The KP CM’s statements mark a growing political tension between the provincial governments of KP and Punjab. Observers note that these warnings signal the potential for large-scale demonstrations if political grievances remain unaddressed.

Meanwhile, the Lahore Press Club condemned reported mistreatment of journalists during Afridi’s visit, stressing the need for media protection. PTI also criticized Punjab authorities for allegedly provoking provincial distrust.
