PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa authorities have prepared a plan to improve water conservation across the province.
According to government documents, the plan focuses on rain harvesting and recycling used water. The initiative aims to reduce water wastage and improve underground water resources.
Under the proposed system, water used at wash stations and homes will be treated and reused. The authorities also plan to make water storage mandatory in new development projects.
The move is expected to help conserve water in residential and development areas. It will also support efforts to improve groundwater levels across the province.
Government data from 37 districts shows progress in storing and recharging rain water. More than 4.5 million litres of water have reportedly been recharged.
Experts have identified 62 locations for improving the province’s sub-surface water levels. These sites have been selected based on water availability and recharge requirements.
The project includes several initiatives aimed at directing rain water into underground sources. This approach can help replenish groundwater and reduce pressure on existing supplies.
According to official documents, 54 of the 62 planned projects have been completed. Work is currently underway at four other sites.
The documents also state that 52 recharge wells have been established across the province. These wells are designed to carry rain water into underground water sources.
Of these recharge wells, 49 are currently fully functional, according to the government data. The remaining facilities are either under development or awaiting completion.
The authorities are also focusing on the reuse of water from households and wash stations. Recycled water could be used for suitable purposes after proper treatment.
The plan is part of broader efforts to address water shortages and improve water management. It also aims to strengthen groundwater recharge through better infrastructure.
Making storage facilities mandatory in new development projects could further support these efforts. The policy may encourage developers to include water conservation systems in future projects.
Officials believe improved water storage and recycling can reduce unnecessary water losses. The measures could also provide additional support during periods of limited water availability.
