The Punjab government has announced a major step to tackle worsening air pollution as Lahore bans entry of heavy traffic amid smog. The decision comes after air quality levels in the provincial capital reached hazardous levels, making Lahore one of the most polluted cities in the world this week.
According to an official notification, Lahore bans entry of heavy traffic amid smog to reduce vehicular emissions during peak pollution hours. Heavy vehicles such as trucks, trailers, and containers will not be allowed to enter the city from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The restriction will remain in place until the air quality improves.
Officials from the Lahore Traffic Police said the move aims to minimize congestion and lower smoke emissions that contribute to smog formation. They added that special teams have been deployed at city entry points to ensure strict enforcement of the ban.
The Environment Protection Department (EPD) has also urged industries to reduce emissions and switch to cleaner fuel options. Schools and offices have been advised to implement flexible timings or remote work options during high smog days.
Medical experts have warned citizens to limit outdoor activities as the smog contains fine particles that can cause respiratory and heart problems. The government has encouraged residents to wear masks and keep windows closed to minimize exposure.
Meanwhile, environmental activists have welcomed the step, saying it reflects growing awareness about climate and public health issues. However, they also called for long-term policies such as promoting electric transport, reforestation, and stricter emission control measures.
