Lahore Basant 2026 Three Dead, 24+ Injured in Kite-Flying Accidents

At least three people have died and more than 24 others were injured during Basant celebrations in Lahore, officials reported on Saturday. The incidents involved kite flying and chasing stray kites, highlighting the ongoing dangers of the festival.

Rescue teams said a 25-year-old man, Rashid, was electrocuted near Sukh Nahar while trying to catch a stray kite. He came into contact with an electricity pole, which led to his tragic death. In another incident, 18-year-old Zain fell from a rooftop in Madina Colony, Baghbanpura, while chasing a kite. He was the only brother of two sisters and could not be saved.

In a separate case, a 35-year-old man named Saad died after falling into a street during kite flying. Witnesses said he had jumped to retrieve a kite but sustained fatal injuries from the fall.

Meanwhile, in Sabzazar, three family members—a man, his brother, and nephew—received severe electric shocks while trying to recover a kite caught on a high-voltage line. They were immediately taken to Jinnah Hospital for treatment and remain under close medical supervision.

Authorities have once again warned citizens to remain careful during Basant festivities. Officials emphasized that risky behaviors, such as climbing rooftops or touching electrical wires, could result in serious injuries or death.

Despite the cultural significance of Basant in Lahore, the festival continues to pose serious safety concerns. Rescue teams have advised participants to use designated kite-flying areas and avoid chasing stray kites in dangerous locations.

Local hospitals have prepared for emergency cases during the festival, ensuring medical staff are ready for potential accidents. Law enforcement is also patrolling key areas to prevent high-risk activities.

Officials urged families to educate children and young adults about kite-related risks. They emphasized that careful participation can help keep the Basant tradition enjoyable while reducing avoidable tragedies.
