LAHORE – Tops Global rankings of polluted cities once again as thick smog and dense fog continue to cover large parts of Punjab. The air quality in the provincial capital has reached dangerous levels, raising serious health concerns.
According to an international air quality monitoring website, Lahore recorded an AQI of 327, placing it at the top of the list. With this latest reading, Lahore Tops Global charts for the worst air quality in the world.
Karachi also reported hazardous conditions with an AQI of 282. Data from the Punjab Environment Department showed Kasur as the most polluted city in the province at 348 AQI. Gujranwala recorded 341 AQI, while Sheikhupura stood at 278 AQI. The widespread increase in smog indicates a severe air pollution crisis across Punjab.
Health officials have warned that exposure to such polluted air can be extremely harmful, especially for children, the elderly, and people with asthma or respiratory problems. They advised residents to stay indoors and wear masks when going outside.
Along with pollution, heavy fog affected daily life in several cities. Visibility dropped sharply, leading to major road closures. Motorway M-5 was shut from Multan Shershah Interchange to Zahir Pir, while parts of Motorway M-1 from Peshawar to Burhan were also closed due to poor visibility.
A Motorway Police spokesperson said visibility on these routes became too low for safe travel. Drivers were instructed to use fog lights, maintain distance, and avoid unnecessary travel. Officials added that the safest time to travel during fog is between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
Authorities said the closures were necessary to protect drivers and prevent accidents. They urged the public to follow safety instructions and limit travel until weather and air quality improve.
