Police investigating the death of student Laiba Ejaz have uncovered allegations of an online impersonation scheme involving ChatGPT. According to police sources, the prime suspect allegedly used artificial intelligence to impersonate two people. He reportedly deceived the student with a false promise of arranging a United States visa.
Investigators have completed preliminary inquiries and gathered information about the suspect, identified as Nauman. Police sources have also outlined his employment history and his alleged dealings with Laiba. However, the allegations have not been established in court.
According to the sources, Nauman worked in the Anti-Corruption Department for 15 years before being dismissed in 2022 over unauthorised absence. He later worked as a manager at several insurance companies. In 2025, he reportedly joined an insurance firm in Islamabad’s Blue Area.
How the Suspect Allegedly Contacted Laiba
Police sources said Nauman first met Laiba in March 2023. She had applied for an internship at an insurance company where he was seeking staff. Although they met, she could not join because she was already providing private tuition.
Nauman later hired Laiba, her sister and their mother for advertising work related to a tuck shop. According to investigators, a woman named Aiza managed the shop and paid them for their services. Aiza’s brother reportedly lived in the United States.
When Laiba expressed an interest in studying abroad, she reportedly sought help obtaining a US visa through Aiza’s brother. Police sources allege that Nauman used this opportunity to deceive her.
ChatGPT Allegedly Used for Impersonation
Investigators allege that Nauman created another account while pretending to be Aiza. He reportedly used ChatGPT to impersonate both Aiza and her brother during communications with Laiba.
According to police sources, the suspect sent her documents related to the supposed visa process. The alleged communications initially appeared convincing, leaving Laiba unaware that the documents were reportedly fake.
Nauman allegedly provided several dates for her visa interview. These included September 1, September 17 and September 26. The repeated changes reportedly raised Laiba’s suspicions.
She subsequently examined the documents and discovered that they were allegedly fraudulent, according to the investigation.
Rs2.1 Million and Jewellery Allegedly Handed Over
Police sources further claimed that Laiba gave Nauman money obtained from her father. The amount reportedly came from the sale of a plot worth Rs2.1 million. She also allegedly handed over her stepmother’s jewellery.
According to investigators, Laiba faced pressure to return the jewellery to her stepmother. She reportedly asked Nauman to return it, offering to discuss the remaining money later.
However, the suspect allegedly began ignoring her and eventually stopped communicating with her. Police sources said Laiba later died by suicide after being unable to resolve the situation.
The circumstances described in the investigation highlight the serious consequences of the alleged deception. The reported financial losses and personal pressure form key parts of the case.
Police Investigate Possible Additional Victims
Investigators suspect that Nauman may have targeted other women through similar alleged schemes. Police sources said he deleted data from his mobile phone before his arrest, potentially complicating the investigation. Authorities plan to conduct a forensic examination of the device. They hope to recover deleted information, identify possible additional victims and collect further evidence.
