Lawyers, Opposition Protest Against 27th Amendment In Pakistan

Lawyers in Sindh staged a protest against the 27th Amendment, which has sparked nationwide controversy. The Sindh High Court (SHC) administration had denied permission for a convention inside its premises. Following this, Sindh High Court Bar Association President Barrister Mohammad Sarfaraz Ali Metlo officially canceled the indoor event.

In response, the lawyers organized their convention outside the SHC. A heavy police presence was deployed at the court gates to prevent entry. Despite the restrictions, lawyers marched in a rally towards the SHC. Tensions rose as police tried to stop them, resulting in a scuffle. Several officers, including the SHO of Preedy Police Station, were reportedly manhandled. Some officers fled as the situation escalated.

The lawyers then forcibly entered the SHC New Bar Room and held their convention there. Reports confirm that both entry to the SHC building and the New Bar Room had been explicitly restricted before the protest.

Meanwhile, the opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Ayen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) announced countrywide protests against the 27th Amendment. The TTAP meeting in the capital was led by Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly from PTI. The alliance had earlier staged a protest walk from the Parliament to the Supreme Court of Pakistan, expressing strong opposition to the amendment.

TTAP also plans to actively participate in lawyersโ€™ protests in Lahore. The alliance has termed the 27th Amendment an attack on the constitutionโ€™s basic structure. A resolution is expected in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly against the amendment. TTAP described the move as a strike on the judiciary, a fundamental pillar of the state.

The opposition had observed a โ€œBlack Dayโ€ on November 21, emphasizing the amendmentโ€™s impact on democratic institutions. The 27th Amendment continues to trigger protests and debates across Pakistan.
