LHC Orders Action Against Major Pollution Contributors In Lahore

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed strict measures against individuals and entities identified as key pollution contributors in the city. The decision comes amid rising smog levels and deteriorating air quality.

During todayโ€™s hearing, Justice Shahid Karim expressed concern over smoke-emitting vehicles, noting that they remain a major source of pollution. He emphasized that these vehicles are among the primary pollution contributors affecting Lahoreโ€™s air quality index. The judge remarked, โ€œEnough has already happened,โ€ highlighting the urgent need for enforcement.

The court instructed the Director General to ensure environmental squads are visibly active on city roads. Justice Karim added that such enforcement would significantly reduce emissions and curb other pollution contributors, such as excessive construction activities.

The effectiveness of existing anti-smog measures, including the anti-smog gun, was also questioned. The court noted that these tools are largely ineffective if vehicles continue to emit smoke at current levels. The Environment Department was reminded of its powers to take strict action against violators and urged to exercise them fully.

WASAโ€™s performance was criticized for failing to make substantial progress on water meter installations. Similarly, the Pakistan Housing Authority (PHA) confirmed that it has not cut down a single tree, aligning with the ongoing ban on tree removal. Justice Karim emphasized that preserving trees is crucial to mitigate pollution contributors in the city.

The Environment Department reported that, going forward, vehicles will not be registered without clearance certificates, aiming to reduce emissions from new and old vehicles. The court also requested updates on Miyawaki forest projects across Lahore, which are intended to improve air quality.

The hearing was adjourned until November 28, with the court expecting concrete action from environmental authorities and other responsible bodies to curb the major pollution contributors affecting Lahore.
