A serious security incident has been reported at Malir Jail in Karachi after a prisoner escaped under unclear circumstances. The case has raised concerns about jail security and monitoring systems.
The suspect, identified as Naveed alias Polka, was facing charges of kidnapping and murder. He was arrested in connection with a case registered at Joharabad police station. The case involved the kidnapping and killing of a local trader.
According to officials, the escape took place after a ceremony linked to Marka-e-Haq. During routine procedures after the event, jail authorities conducted a headcount. It was then discovered that one prisoner was missing.
The prisoner had been in custody for a few days before the incident. He was allegedly involved in serious criminal activities, including kidnapping and murder. His identification later helped police recover the body of the victim.
Authorities said Naveed also had a past criminal history. He was previously arrested in connection with the murder of journalist Wali Babar. However, he was later acquitted due to lack of evidence in that case.
The escape has triggered an internal investigation. Officials are now reviewing how security was breached despite arrangements in place for Marka-e-Haq activities inside the jail premises.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the overall security situation at Malir Jail. Last year, more than 200 prisoners escaped from the same facility. That mass escape had already led to increased security measures.
Despite earlier improvements, the latest escape suggests possible lapses in monitoring. Authorities are now trying to determine whether procedural negligence or system failure played a role.
Police and jail administration teams are jointly investigating the matter. They are expected to review CCTV footage and staff deployment records. The goal is to identify how the prisoner managed to escape undetected.
Officials said strict action will be taken if negligence is found. The incident has also renewed calls for stronger prison security reforms.
