A man has filed a lawsuit against Karachi Electric (KE) demanding Rs20.2 million in damages over the death of his father due to unexpected loadshedding. The petition, filed by Adnan through his lawyer Usman Farooq, alleges that his father suffered a fatal cardiac arrest caused by extended power outages during a heatwave on June 29. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he did not survive.

The legal action accuses KE of negligence, arguing that the company’s failure to provide reliable electricity led to the fatal incident. The Sindh High Court (SHC) has also demanded KE’s loadshedding schedule as part of the case proceedings. The petitioner’s lawyer contends that KE has grossly failed in its duty to serve customers effectively.

KE, which was privatized in 2005 and is Pakistan’s only vertically integrated utility, covers a 6500 km² area including Karachi and its surrounding regions. The company, originally known as KESC, has faced criticism for its handling of power supply issues, especially during extreme weather conditions.
