Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has issued a 30-day deadline to improve Lahore traffic and ensure better road safety across the city.
In a high-level meeting, officials were briefed on plans for a modern traffic management system. The discussion focused on road safety, enforcement, and strategies to reduce congestion in Lahore.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that traffic issues need urgent attention in all cities, including Lahore. She warned that everyone violating traffic laws will face strict fines. The Chief Minister also cautioned traffic police, stating this is their last chance to improve performance. If results are not visible, a new department may be established to manage Lahore traffic more efficiently.
Officials announced a 30-day decisive period for visible improvement in the cityโs traffic situation. The briefing highlighted 20 major reforms in the 60-year-old traffic act. Vehicles repeatedly violating rules will now face auctions, and government vehicles breaking laws will incur heavy penalties. Additionally, a 30-day grace period has been set to end violations of one-way traffic rules.
To prevent underage driving, authorities will launch a strict crackdown. Vehicle owners could face imprisonment of up to six months. The enforcement will also target passengers riding on bus roofs, a common safety concern.
The meeting also addressed specific vehicle restrictions. Chingchi rickshaws will be banned entirely from Lahoreโs five model roads. Marriage halls will be required to provide adequate parking for their events. Operations without proper parking facilities will not be permitted.
The Punjab CM concluded that while many traffic issues have been partially addressed, continued violations reflect weakened state authority. The 30-day plan aims to bring immediate improvement in Lahore traffic, making roads safer and more organized for citizens.
