Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Vows Strict Action Against Price Hikes During Ramazan

LAHORE โ€“ Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that strict action will be taken against anyone hoarding or raising prices of essential goods during Ramazan.

According to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), the first day of Ramazan is expected to fall on February 19, 2026. The final confirmation will come from the Ruet-i-Hilal Committee after verifying credible sightings of the moon across the country.

โ€œTaking advantage of citizens in this holy month will not be allowed under any circumstances,โ€ Maryam Nawaz wrote on X, stressing that enforcement will be strict and impartial.

The Chief Minister said that detailed instructions and actions will be discussed in a meeting on Monday morning. Authorities are being directed to ensure essential items remain available at official prices throughout the province.

The Punjab Food Safety and Consumer Protection (FS&CP) department has already instructed the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (Pera) to monitor markets closely. Any retailer found overcharging or hoarding goods will face strict legal action, according to FS&CP Special Assistant Salma Butt.

The department has also completed all necessary preparations to ensure smooth supply of essential food items before the start of Ramazan. Pera officers have been directed to remain vigilant and act immediately against violations.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a Ramazan Relief Package worth Rs38 billion for deserving families across Pakistan, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The package will benefit 12.1 million families, with funds distributed through digital bank accounts.

In her statement, Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the government will protect citizens from unfair price hikes and ensure access to basic goods. Authorities will remain alert during the holy month to maintain affordability and stability in the markets.
