The opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Aayine-e-Pakistan (TTAP) is reportedly planning a major leadership reshuffle, with discussions underway about a possible change in the allianceโs name.
Sources revealed on Thursday that TTAP chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai may step down following his nomination as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly by PTI founder Imran Khan.
Reports suggest that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) could join TTAP, and Maulana Fazlur Rehman is emerging as the likely new head of the opposition alliance. His leadership is expected to guide TTAPโs upcoming nationwide protests against the recently enacted 27th Amendment. Both sides strongly oppose the amendment, citing concerns over constitutional integrity.
Some PTI leaders have reportedly expressed reservations about naming Maulana Fazlur Rehman as the head of the alliance. However, sources say negotiations are ongoing, and the alliance may eventually be renamed the Grand Opposition Alliance if talks proceed smoothly.
A senior PTI official stated that discussions with Maulana Fazlur Rehman are nearly 60% complete. A PTI delegation is expected to meet him within the next two to three days to finalize the leadership structure. Once concluded, PTI founder Imran Khan will give the final approval for the new opposition alliance.
Earlier, TTAP announced countrywide protests in response to the 27th Amendment. The alliance issued a press release detailing its plans, including participation in a lawyersโ protest in Lahore and observing a nationwide โBlack Dayโ on November 21.
TTAP has described the 27th Amendment as an attack on the basic structure of the Constitution. The alliance also plans to present a resolution against the amendment in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
If finalized, Maulana Fazlur Rehmanโs leadership could significantly reshape the oppositionโs strategy, uniting multiple parties under a single banner to challenge the recent constitutional amendment.
The coming days will be crucial for TTAP, as negotiations and protests are expected to intensify ahead of the allianceโs formal announcement.
