ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court in Islamabad has announced its verdict in a high-profile digital terrorism case linked to state institutions. The court handed down strict punishments after completing the trial related to the May 9 incidents.
The decision was announced by Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra. The verdict came after the prosecution concluded its arguments and presented all evidence. The case focused on alleged online activities that were described as harmful to national institutions.
According to the court ruling, Adil Raja, Haider Mehdi, and Wajahat Saeed were each awarded two terms of ** Life Sentence **. The court found them guilty under multiple sections of anti-terrorism laws. The charges included spreading digital content deemed threatening to public order and state security.
Journalists Sabir Shakir and Moeed Pirzada were also convicted in the same case. Both received two terms of ** Life Sentence ** after the court examined the available material. The judgment stated that their actions played a role in promoting unrest through digital platforms.
In addition to the life terms, the court imposed further jail time on the accused. Each defendant was collectively sentenced to 35 additional years in prison under different charges. The court also imposed financial penalties. A total fine of Rs1.5 million was announced for all convicted individuals.
The prosecution presented strong arguments during the trial. A total of 24 witnesses testified before the court. Raja Naveed Hussain Kayani represented the prosecution. The witnesses included officials who shared technical and documentary evidence.
The trial was conducted in absentia. The accused were not present during the proceedings. The court stated that anti-terrorism laws allow trials without the physical presence of suspects in such cases. The process continued as per legal requirements.
Separate cases were linked to the Rawalpindi and Ramna police stations. In those cases, Sabir Shakir, Moeed Pirzada, and Syed Akbar Hussain were sentenced to ** Life Sentence ** terms. Shahin Sahbai, Haider Mehdi, and Wajahat Saeed also received punishments related to the Ramna case.
The court appointed Gulfam Ashraf Goraya as the defense counsel. He represented the accused during legal proceedings. The judgment emphasized that all legal steps were followed during the trial.
