Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif departed for London on Saturday, ARY News reported. He traveled via Qatar Airways and is expected to stay in the United Kingdom for around 15 days to undergo routine medical examinations.
The visit comes just days after Nawaz Sharif attended the National Assembly session and voted in favor of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. On Wednesday, Pakistanโs National Assembly passed the landmark bill with a two-thirds majority, while the opposition staged a walkout in protest.
The session saw high political drama and was attended by key figures, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, PML-N president Nawaz Sharif, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. The passage of the amendment has also led to resignations from two senior judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah. Justice Shah criticized the 27th Amendment, calling it a severe attack on the Constitution and stating that justice has moved away from the common man.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan commented on Nawaz Sharifโs political standing, saying that he has become irrelevant in Pakistanโs politics. Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Gohar remarked that whether Sharif attends the National Assembly session or not, he no longer holds political influence in the country.
Despite the political debate and criticism, Nawaz Sharifโs London visit is focused on his health and routine medical assessments. His stay is expected to last about two weeks, during which he will undergo various medical checkups.
The former prime minister has faced health concerns in recent years, and his medical trips to the UK are closely monitored by both his party and the media. Political analysts continue to debate his role and influence following the recent parliamentary session.
