The National Emergencies Operations Center (NEOC) of NDMA has issued a cold wave alert for Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The alert warns of very cold to extremely cold weather in the coming days.
Meteorologists predict that nighttime and early morning temperatures will be significantly low, while daytime temperatures are expected to remain below normal. Moderate to heavy snowfall is also forecast for high-altitude and hilly areas, which may affect road connectivity, transportation, and power supply.
Authorities have warned that the prevailing conditions could increase the risk of avalanches and snow slides in mountainous regions. The cold wave alert emphasizes threats to human safety, livestock, and critical infrastructure.
In adjoining plains, cold and dry weather is expected, with isolated pockets of frost that may damage crops and orchards. Prolonged exposure to extreme cold may also increase health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing medical conditions.
NDMA has advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel to snowfall-prone and high-altitude areas. For unavoidable travel, snow chains and safety measures are strongly recommended. The agency also urges communities to make adequate arrangements for heating, warm clothing, and shelter, prioritizing vulnerable populations.
Local authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness for snow clearance, emergency response, and timely restoration of electricity and communications. The NEOC will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.
Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through verified sources and the โPak NDMA Disaster Alertโ mobile application. The ongoing cold wave alert highlights the importance of caution and adherence to official guidelines to reduce risks during extreme winter conditions.
The NDMA warns that the cold wave alert could last several days, urging all communities to remain vigilant and prepared for harsh weather in the affected regions.
