KARACHI โ Senior politician Nehal Hashmi has been nominated as the next governor of Sindh, replacing Kamran Tessori. The Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, forwarded Hashmiโs nomination to President Asif Ali Zardari for final approval.
The PM personally met Nehal Hashmi and congratulated him on being chosen for the key post. The appointment is expected to become official once the president grants approval.
This decision comes amid mounting criticism of outgoing Governor Kamran Tessori. Legal circles and political leaders have accused Tessori of conducting political activities at the Governor House, which they argue violate constitutional norms.
Last month, the Sindh Bar Council demanded Tessoriโs immediate removal. The council stated that political gatherings at the official residence were unconstitutional. A resolution passed during its 109th meeting on February 21 declared Tessori โunfit to represent the federationโ and urged President Zardari to remove him promptly.
The controversy intensified on February 20 when Sindhi nationalist leaders criticized a Governor House event attended by Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) members. Ayaz Latif Palijo, leader of the Qaumi Awami Tehreek, accused Tessori of turning the Governor House into a โcenter for conspiracies against Sindh and Pakistan.โ He warned that attempts to weaken Sindh could threaten national unity.
Adding to the criticism, Sindh Senior Minister and Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon condemned speeches delivered at the same event. He called the remarks โhatefulโ and โlinguistically biased,โ stating they were inappropriate for a constitutional platform.
Nehal Hashmiโs nomination is seen as a strategic move to stabilize the provinceโs top office amid ongoing controversies. Political observers note that his appointment could help restore confidence in the Governor House and address concerns raised by legal institutions.
