The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a petition to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking approval for an electricity tariff adjustment. NEPRA is scheduled to hear the petition tomorrow.
According to the CPPA, a total of 8.487 billion units of electricity were generated in December. Out of this, 8.208 billion units were supplied to distribution companies (DISCOs). The average per-unit cost of electricity in December was Rs9.62.
During the month, 18.07 percent of electricity came from hydel sources. Local coal contributed 13.99 percent, while imported coal accounted for 10.13 percent. Natural gas-based generation made up 11.20 percent, with imported LNG providing 17.24 percent. Nuclear sources generated 25.05 percent of the total electricity.
Earlier this month, the federal cabinet approved a decision by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) to provide relief to consumers regarding the Off-Grid (Captive Power Plant) Levy. The decision aims to reduce additional charges on electricity bills for consumers of distribution companies.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who chaired the cabinet meeting, said the country’s GDP showed encouraging growth in the first quarter (July–September) of the current fiscal year. He added that the government had successfully steered the economy toward stability and away from the risk of default.
Experts say the proposed electricity tariff adjustment will reflect changes in fuel costs and power generation expenses. NEPRA’s decision could impact household and industrial electricity bills nationwide.
Analysts note that any change in electricity tariff will affect both consumer spending and industrial production. The regulator will carefully review the petition before approving any new rates.
The NEPRA hearing is closely watched by both consumers and power sector stakeholders, as it will determine the cost of electricity for millions of users in the coming months.
