New Oil and Gas Discovery in Waziristan Boosts Energy Prospects

In a promising development for Pakistan’s energy sector, new oil and gas reserves have been discovered in Waziristan. The discovery was made at the Spinam-1 well by Mari Energies, which has been leading the drilling operations since May 28, 2024. The well is producing 12.96 million cubic feet of gas per day along with 20 barrels of crude oil, marking a significant milestone in domestic energy exploration.

Mari Energies holds a 55% stake in the Waziristan block, working alongside joint venture partners Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and Oil and Gas Investment Limited (OPI). The company has expressed confidence that the discovery will strengthen Pakistan’s hydrocarbon reserves, contributing to the country’s energy security.

The company also credited national security agencies and both federal and provincial governments for their cooperation and support in facilitating the project in a region often regarded as difficult to access.

This discovery follows the successful exploration of oil and gas reserves last year in Sindh’s Shah Bandar block by Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL). The Shah Bandar block has been producing 10 million cubic feet of natural gas and 150 barrels of light oil daily, further augmenting Pakistan’s natural gas supply.

With ongoing exploration and new discoveries, Pakistan is steadily increasing its energy production, reducing dependence on imports and enhancing its domestic resources.
