Pakistan calls for protection of Muslim religious heritage as the country marked the anniversary of the demolition of the historic Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. The Foreign Office highlighted its concerns during the weekly media briefing on Friday, urging global institutions to play their role in safeguarding sacred Islamic sites.
Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said the Babri Masjid remains a powerful reminder of the emotional impact caused by its demolition in 1992. He stated that the event still sparks deep concern among those who oppose intolerance and discrimination. Pakistan calls for protection of religious sites to ensure that such incidents do not repeat in the future.
The spokesperson noted that the disputed site in Ayodhya has long been a point of conflict between Hindus and Muslims. Hindus consider the location the birthplace of Lord Ram, while the Babri Masjid, built in 1528 by the Mughal Empire, carried immense spiritual significance for Muslims. The tension intensified last year when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised a saffron flag over the newly completed Ram Mandir, marking the formal end of a decades-long dispute.
Andrabi stressed that the preservation of sacred places is a shared global responsibility. He said acts that undermine Muslim religious symbols must be addressed with transparency and justice. Pakistan calls for protection and stresses that violations at any place of worship weaken religious equality and disturb the sense of security that all communities deserve.
He added that Indian Muslims continue to experience emotional distress following the demolition. According to Pakistan, extremist groups feel empowered and are pushing for the further marginalisation of religious minorities.
The Foreign Office reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to interfaith harmony and the protection of minority rights within its own borders. Andrabi urged the international community, including UN bodies and global leaders, to help ensure that Muslim heritage is respected and preserved.
On this anniversary, Pakistan expressed solidarity with Muslims who still feel the pain of the event. The FO said the moment should also inspire a renewed focus on dignity, justice, and respect for sacred heritage.
