Pakistan Faces Drought Risk Due to La Nina Weather Phenomenon

La Nina

Pakistan is among 20 countries at risk of experiencing severe dry conditions as the La Nina weather phenomenon is anticipated to develop in late 2024 and continue into early 2025. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recently released a report highlighting the potential impact of La Nina on global weather patterns, particularly its threat to agriculture and food security in vulnerable regions like Pakistan.

While La Nina has yet to be officially declared, similar weather conditions have already been observed in some areas. The FAO is closely monitoring the phenomenon’s development to assess its potential effects on crop yields and food availability. The anticipated shift in weather patterns could exacerbate existing challenges for Pakistan, further straining its agricultural output and food supply.

In an effort to address the looming threat, the FAO has implemented a La Nina Anticipatory Action and Response Plan aimed at reducing the adverse effects on agriculture. The plan includes distributing drought-resistant seeds and farming equipment before the planting season, as well as providing livestock feed and health support to affected communities.

Other crucial measures suggested by the FAO involve rehabilitating communal water sources, training farmers in water-harvesting techniques, and improving post-harvest management to minimize losses. The report also emphasized that La Nina may compound the challenges caused by the 2023-24 El Nino event, which resulted in record-high temperatures, droughts, and floods that disrupted agricultural production and intensified food insecurity across various regions.
