Pakistan’s federal government Debt reached Rs. 83.383 trillion in July 2026, according to the State Bank of Pakistan.
The latest figures show an increase of 6.6 percent compared with the same month last year. However, government debt recorded a slight decline compared with the previous month.
Federal government debt stood at Rs. 83.642 trillion in June 2026. It declined by around 0.3 percent in July.
The figures indicate that debt remained above Rs. 83 trillion despite the monthly reduction.
Domestic Debt Rises 7.8 Percent
Central government domestic Debt increased significantly on a year-on-year basis. According to SBP data, domestic debt reached Rs. 59.274 trillion in July 2026.
This represents an increase of 7.8 percent compared with the corresponding period last year.
Domestic borrowing represents a major component of the federal government’s overall debt position. The latest figures also show increases in both long-term and short-term borrowing during the past year.
Long-Term Public Debt Increases
Long-term public debt rose from Rs. 46.191 trillion to Rs. 48.377 trillion during the year.
This represents an increase of more than Rs. 2 trillion over the period. Long-term borrowing generally includes government obligations with longer repayment periods.
The increase shows that this category continued to account for a large portion of domestic borrowing.
Short-term government borrowing also recorded a notable increase during the same period.
Short-Term Debt Reaches Rs. 10.815 Trillion
The stock of short-term Debt increased from Rs. 8.726 trillion to Rs. 10.815 trillion.
This represents an increase of more than Rs. 2 trillion compared with the previous year.
The latest data therefore shows growth across major categories of government domestic borrowing. Overall federal government debt, meanwhile, remained above the Rs. 83 trillion level in July.
Despite the 6.6 percent annual increase, the monthly figures showed a small improvement.
Debt declined from Rs. 83.642 trillion in June to Rs. 83.383 trillion in July. This represents a reduction of approximately Rs. 259 billion within one month.
The State Bank of Pakistan data provides an updated picture of the federal government’s borrowing position.
The figures show that domestic debt continued to increase annually despite the slight monthly decline in total government debt.
