Pakistan Secures $300 Million ADB Funding to Protect Coastlines, Boost Agriculture

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have reaffirmed their commitment to ensure effective use of funds and timely project completion. The renewed partnership aims to strengthen climate resilience and support sustainable development across the country.

The agreement marks a major step for Pakistan in addressing climate change challenges. The country has secured more than $300 million in climate financing from ADB. The funding will support coastal protection and low-carbon agriculture projects.

The financing covers two major initiatives. These include the Sindh Coastal Resilience Sector Project and the Punjab Climate Resilient and Low Carbon Agriculture Mechanisation Project. Both agreements were signed at a ceremony held in Islamabad.

The Sindh Coastal Resilience Sector Project has a total cost of $180.5 million. It is designed to protect vulnerable coastal areas from climate-related risks. The project focuses on integrated water resource management and flood risk reduction. It will also restore natural coastal defenses using nature-based solutions.

ADB is providing $140.5 million for this project. This includes a $140 million loan and a $0.5 million technical assistance grant. Additional funding includes $40 million from the Green Climate Fund. The Sindh government will contribute $20 million as counterpart funding.

The project is expected to directly benefit more than 3.8 million people. These beneficiaries live in the districts of Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin. Institutional capacity building and community disaster preparedness are also key components.

The second initiative targets agriculture in Punjab. The Punjab Climate Resilient and Low Carbon Agriculture Mechanisation Project has a total outlay of $129 million. It will be implemented across 30 districts of the province.

ADB will finance $124 million of the project. This includes a $120 million loan and a $4 million grant. The Punjab government will contribute $5 million.

The project aims to modernize farming practices. Small farmers will gain access to climate-smart machinery. Circular farming methods will reduce crop residue burning. Training and testing facilities will support modern agriculture.

Women empowerment is a central focus. Around 15,000 women will receive skills training. They will also get support for diversified livelihoods.

Secretary Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim praised ADB as a reliable development partner. He said the projects will protect livelihoods and strengthen food security. ADB Country Director Emma Fan welcomed Pakistanโ€™s strong commitment and stressed the urgency of tackling climate risks.
