Pakistan Honors Major Shabbir Sharif On His 54th Martyrdom Anniversary

Pakistani armed forces paid tribute to one of the nation’s greatest war heroes on the 54th anniversary of Major Shabbir Sharif’s sacrifice. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu honored the legendary officer for his extraordinary courage and dedication to Pakistan.

More than five decades have passed, yet the memory of Major Shabbir Sharif’s sacrifice remains vivid. He was awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military honor, for his bravery in the 1971 war. Earlier, he received the Sitara-e-Jurat for gallantry during the 1965 conflict, cementing his reputation as a fearless and exemplary soldier.

On the night of December 5–6, 1971, Sharif led a daring operation near the Sulemanki Headworks. He personally engaged enemy forces at point-blank range and eliminated Major Narain Singh, the commander of India’s 4 Jat Regiment. His audacity stunned allies and adversaries alike, marking a defining moment in Pakistan’s military history.

Sharif continued to defend the captured position throughout the following day. He repelled relentless enemy counterattacks, personally destroyed advancing Indian tanks with a recoilless rifle, and held the strategic point despite heavy shelling. His courage and leadership inspired troops and set an enduring example of valor and patriotism.

Armed forces reaffirmed their deep respect for all those who have laid down their lives defending Pakistan’s sovereignty. Officials stated that Major Shabbir Sharif’s sacrifice will continue to serve as a guiding light for generations of Pakistanis. The nation remembers his bravery, selflessness, and dedication to the homeland with profound gratitude.

The tribute on his martyrdom anniversary highlights the timeless legacy of courage, discipline, and honor that Major Shabbir Sharif embodied. His story remains a symbol of unwavering commitment to the defense and pride of Pakistan.
