Large-Scale Manufacturing In Pakistan Shows Strong Growth

Pakistan’s large-scale manufacturing industries (LSMI) recorded notable growth during the first quarter of FY2025-26, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). Overall production in large-scale sectors increased by 4.08% compared to the same period last year.

In September alone, large-scale manufacturing output rose by 2.69% year-on-year, showing steady growth. Month-on-month, production increased by 2.05% compared to August. The report highlights strong performance in several key sectors, signaling a positive trend for Pakistan’s industrial base.

Automobile production surged significantly, rising 84.58% during the July to September period. Transport equipment manufacturing also grew by 35.38%, reflecting rising demand and expansion in the mobility sector. Cement production increased by 15.32%, supporting the construction and infrastructure industries.

The food group experienced a 6.94% rise in output, indicating strong performance in essential goods. Tobacco production grew by 2.48%, garments by 2.43%, and leather products by 2.14%. Paper and paperboard manufacturing increased by 5.34%, while rubber products saw a notable growth of 14.10%.

Despite these gains, some sectors faced declines. Machinery and equipment production fell by 14.15%, while furniture manufacturing dropped 22.26%. Chemical products output decreased by 4.38%, and iron and steel production fell by 3.52%.

Overall, the PBS report underscores the mixed performance of Pakistan’s large-scale manufacturing industries. While key sectors such as automobiles, transport equipment, and cement contributed to growth, declines in machinery, furniture, and chemicals highlight ongoing challenges.

Industry experts suggest that sustaining large-scale manufacturing growth will require continued investment, modernization, and policies to support industrial expansion. The report signals that Pakistan’s industrial sector remains resilient, with potential for further growth if challenges are addressed effectively.

The first-quarter performance provides a snapshot of the evolving landscape in Pakistan’s large-scale manufacturing, reflecting both opportunities and areas that need strategic attention for sustained economic progress.
