NHMP Enforces Reduced Speed Limits To Promote Fuel Savings

NHMP Enforces Reduced Speed Limits To Promote Fuel Savings

The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) on Thursday enforced new speed limits on motorways and national highways. The move follows directives from the federal government to promote fuel conservation and energy efficiency.

Under the revised rules, cars and light transport vehicles (LTVs) on motorways must now follow a maximum speed of 100 km/h, reduced from 120 km/h. Passenger service vehicles (PSVs) and heavy transport vehicles (HTVs), including buses and trucks, have a new limit of 90 km/h, down from 110 km/h.

On national highways, the speed limits for cars and LTVs have been lowered from 100 km/h to 80 km/h. For PSVs and HTVs, the limit now stands at 65 km/h, reduced from 80 km/h. These changes came into effect on March 26, 2026.

The NHMP has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to inform drivers about the updated speed limits. Officials emphasized that compliance is necessary to ensure safety and smooth implementation.

Authorities stated the measures aim to reduce fuel consumption, improve road safety, and support broader government energy conservation goals. Motorists are being urged to follow the new limits strictly.

Automotive experts say driving at lower speeds improves fuel efficiency. As vehicles go faster, air resistance increases, forcing engines to consume more fuel. Slower driving reduces fuel usage, making transportation more economical.

Global disruptions in oil supply due to tensions in the Middle East have contributed to rising fuel prices. In response, Pakistan and several other countries are implementing measures to curb fuel consumption.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that reducing highway speed limits by 10 km/h can lower oil consumption from cars by 1 to 6 percent. Governments worldwide are encouraged to adopt similar measures during energy crises.

With these new speed limits, Pakistan aims to save fuel, improve road safety, and promote sustainable energy use while helping citizens adapt to rising fuel costs.
