Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari has announced major changes in the power sector. He said electricity in Pakistan will soon become much cheaper for consumers. He added that future systems may allow users to store electricity during the day and use it at night.
The minister shared these remarks while addressing a conference in Lahore through a video link. He said the government is introducing wide-ranging reforms in the energy sector. These reforms aim to improve efficiency and reduce the overall cost of electricity in the long run.
He stated that the role of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) is being reduced. According to him, the previous IPP-based business model is no longer part of future planning. He also said the government has stopped plans to add 10,000 megawatts through such agreements.
Shift Toward Modern Energy Systems
Awais Leghari explained that the focus is now shifting toward privatization and smart technology. He said smart metering systems will help improve billing accuracy and reduce losses.
He also said private companies will be encouraged to introduce modern solutions in the energy sector. These steps are expected to improve the supply and management of electricity across the country.
The minister added that electricity tariffs will be redesigned for different sectors. Industries and agriculture will receive separate pricing structures. He mentioned that off-peak rates could drop to around 6 to 7 rupees per unit during daytime hours.
Efforts to Reduce Consumer Burden
The government is also working to fix faulty billing systems. The minister said defective electricity meters will not be allowed to remain in use for long periods. This step aims to reduce unnecessary financial pressure on consumers.
He further stated that improvements in procurement processes have already created savings. These savings are helping to reduce overall system costs.
According to him, better management of electricity distribution companies is also being planned. The government expects privatization of these companies within the next one to two years.

The minister expressed confidence that electricity prices will continue to fall in the coming years. He said reforms will make electricity more affordable and reliable for households and businesses.
