Pakistan is set to push forward with the complete privatization of three major power distribution companies this year, government sources confirmed on Wednesday. The move is part of the countryโs efforts to secure a loan tranche from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
According to sources, the government plans to start bidding for the three distribution companies in mid-April. The companies included are Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO).
The privatization of these companies has been listed as a top priority. Financial advisers are working urgently to ensure all preparations are completed on time. They aim to finalize the transaction plans for each company in the first week of April. These plans will then be submitted to the Privatization Board and the cabinetโs Privatization Committee for approval.
The timeline for the complete privatization has also been shared. FESCO is expected to be privatized by October 2026. GEPCOโs privatization is scheduled for November 2026, while IESCO will follow in December of the same year. Sources noted that these targets are crucial for meeting Pakistanโs financial and energy sector goals.
Officials emphasized that the privatization process is being closely monitored to ensure transparency and efficiency. The government believes that private sector management can improve operational efficiency, reduce losses, and enhance service delivery to consumers.
Experts say the complete privatization of these distribution companies could also attract foreign investment, strengthen the financial sector, and support Pakistanโs commitments under international financial agreements.
As preparations continue, the government is expected to make official announcements regarding the bidding process and detailed transaction plans soon. Stakeholders from the energy and finance sectors are watching closely, as this move could reshape Pakistanโs electricity distribution landscape.
