Pakistan’s Population could rise to 400 million by 2040 if current growth trends continue, according to Minister of State for Health Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath. He said immediate action is needed to manage the country’s rapid population growth and reduce pressure on public services.
The minister shared these remarks during a ceremony held at the Basic Health Unit in Tarlai. He stressed that public awareness and individual responsibility are essential to address the challenges linked to the growing Population.
Dr. Bharath said maternal and child healthcare should become a national priority. He added that family planning is equally important to ensure healthier families and sustainable development across the country.
According to the minister, parents should carefully consider their ability to provide essential needs before planning a family. These needs include proper nutrition, quality education, immunization, healthcare, and a safe upbringing for every child.
He said a healthy society depends on children receiving their basic rights from birth. Ensuring access to healthcare and education can improve the country’s long-term social and economic development.
The minister also expressed concern over the low use of modern contraceptive methods in Pakistan. He noted that the country lags behind nations such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Türkiye in adopting family planning measures.
Dr. Bharath explained that limited use of family planning contributes to unintended pregnancies. It also increases the number of unsafe abortions, which can pose serious health risks for women.
He added that these challenges place additional pressure on Pakistan’s healthcare system. Hospitals and medical facilities often face increased demand due to preventable maternal health issues.
The minister urged citizens to adopt responsible family planning practices. He said informed decisions can help improve the well-being of families while supporting the country’s future development.
Managing Population growth, he said, requires cooperation from both the government and the public. Awareness campaigns and improved access to reproductive healthcare can play a key role in achieving this goal.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health also highlighted international support for Pakistan’s reproductive health programs. A ministry spokesperson said China, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has provided reproductive health and family planning medicines, equipment, and medical supplies worth $2 million.
Officials said the assistance will strengthen reproductive healthcare services across Pakistan. It is expected to improve access to essential medical supplies and support family planning initiatives in different regions.
