Pakistan Railways has announced a major digitization program to modernize railway operations across the country. The department plans to install a 1,700-kilometer fiber-optic network and introduce smart railway systems under the new initiative.
Officials said the project aims to improve passenger services, freight management, and operational efficiency. The modernization effort is part of a broader plan to bring advanced digital technology into the railway sector.
According to official documents, the project falls under the Railway Advance Infrastructure Network, also known as RAIN. Authorities described it as the first major revenue-focused digitization initiative in the 78-year history of Pakistan Railways.
The new system is expected to create a complete digital ecosystem for railway operations. Officials said the network would support communication, monitoring, and data management services across multiple railway divisions.
Under the plan, Pakistan Railways will develop a 1,700km fiber-optic backbone throughout the country. Around 700km of the network will use railway-owned infrastructure. The remaining 1,000km will be built in partnership with the Frontier Works Organization.
Officials stated that the collaboration would help speed up the implementation process. The project will also use public-private partnership models for bandwidth transmission and other technical services.
Pakistan Railways also plans to launch its first fully digital manifest system for freight operations. The system is expected to improve cargo tracking, reduce paperwork, and increase efficiency in goods transportation.
Authorities said freight documentation and monitoring would become faster and more accurate after digitization. The department believes this step could help improve revenue generation and operational transparency.
The project also includes GPS-based tracking systems for locomotives and rolling stock. Officials explained that the tracking technology would strengthen operational management and improve train monitoring nationwide.
Pakistan Railways aims to use modern digital tools to upgrade outdated systems and improve overall service quality. Officials added that smart railway systems would help provide better facilities for passengers and businesses using railway services.
