LAHORE: Pakistan Railways has announced a rise in Train fares after a sharp increase in diesel prices. The decision comes just days before Eid-ul-Fitr and may affect many travelers across the country.
Officials said the fare increase was necessary because diesel costs have gone up significantly. A spokesperson for Pakistan Railways explained that operating a Train service depends heavily on fuel. The recent fuel price hike made it difficult to maintain previous ticket rates.
According to the new announcement, economy class Train tickets will increase by 5 percent. Passengers traveling in air-conditioned classes will see a 10 percent rise in fares. Freight charges for goods transport will increase by up to 20 percent.
Railway authorities confirmed that the new rates will take effect on March 9. However, passengers who booked their Train tickets before the announcement will not have to pay the higher fares. Their tickets will remain valid at the previous prices.
Officials said Pakistan Railways will still absorb part of the operational costs. The aim is to reduce the financial burden on passengers as much as possible. Despite the increase, authorities say they are trying to keep Train travel affordable for the public.
The fare increase follows a major rise in fuel prices announced by the government. Petrol prices have increased by Rs.55 per litre, reaching Rs.321.17 per litre. Diesel prices have also climbed to Rs.335.86 per litre. Kerosene prices have jumped as well, reaching Rs.318.81 per litre.
Experts believe the rise in fuel prices will impact several sectors. Transportation costs are expected to increase first. This includes road transport and Train services across the country.
Many passengers depend on railways for long-distance travel, especially during holidays. With Eid-ul-Fitr approaching, thousands of people are expected to travel to their hometowns. The new Train fares may increase travel expenses for many families.
Economic analysts also warn that higher fuel prices could cause broader inflation. Increased transportation costs often lead to higher prices for goods and services.

Pakistan Railways officials say they will continue to monitor fuel prices and operational costs. Any future changes in Train fares will depend on economic conditions and fuel price trends in the coming months.
